Surface Shotfirer Short Course

The Surface Shotfirer Short Course is aligned with nationally recognised units of competency, which are required for participants to apply for their surface shotfirer licence.  The Surface Shotfirer Short Course provided by Modular Training is approved by the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS).  The Surface Shotfirer Short Course offered by Modular Training allows the graduate to be eligible to apply to DMIRS for a licence for all surface operations outside of town boundaries.  Should prospective students wish to be eligible for a licence for all surface operations inside and outside of town boundaries, they need to also undertake an additional unit of competency.
The Surface Shotfirer Short Course is conducted face to face, or via distance learning through video conferencing.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
All courses provided by Modular Training are approved by DMIRS to enable applicants to apply for their Shotfirer licence from DMIRS.  To apply for a shotfirer licence, you are required to submit the following supporting documentation with your application to DMIRS:
  • A Statement of Attainment (no more than 6 months old which is issued upon satisfactory completion of this course);
  • A medical certificate (no more than 6 months old);
  • A passport photo; and
  • A Dangerous Goods Security Card (DGSC).

DMIRS requires that you must be at least 18 years of age to apply for a shotfirer licence.
 
Modular Training’s enrolment and training and assessment processes reflect the stringent nature of DMIRS’ regulation of the dangerous goods and explosives industry.  As a DMIRS approved provider, we take our responsibility to train the shotfirers of tomorrow seriously to ensure that they can go home to their families at night.  For that reason, Modular Training provides the most comprehensive course, based in the classroom and in your workplace. This means that your training and assessment is not only conducted in accordance with your work requirements, but it is informed by your company’s needs and based on the very equipment that you’ll be working with on a day to day basis.  Our blended approach to delivery means that we work closely with your employer to ensure that your training and assessment reflects your needs and theirs and is consistent with the regulatory requirements of DMIRS.
 
Due to the nature of this course, and Modular Training’s commitment to producing graduates of the highest standard, all prospective students must be able to demonstrate the following evidence for their application to be considered:
  • You must be currently employed by a company where you are part of a shotfiring team; 
  • You must also be able to demonstrate a minimum of 6 months’ experience as part of a shotfiring team;
  • You must be at least 18 years old;
  • You must have a Dangerous Goods Safety Card (DGSC).
Students whose enrolment has been accepted must bring the original copies of their DGSC. 
 
Your workplace must also meet specific criteria for you to be able to complete your assessment in your workplace.  This includes:
  • Your workplace must be approved by Modular Training for participation in the workplace component of your course.  This approval process includes for example:
    • Confirmation that your worksite is DMIRS approved;
    • There are no outstanding regulatory issues etc.;
    • That your workplace has access to all required equipment and resources to facilitate your evidence collection.
  • You must have a licenced shotfirer who agrees to be your Workplace Supervisor;
  • Your workplace agrees to supporting you to compile your evidence as part of your work based assessment program.
 
Upon receipt of your application for enrolment, Modular Training will confirm your eligibility to proceed with enrolment.
 

Introduction:

The Surface Shotfirer Short Course is conducted face to face or via distance learning through video conferencing.  Regardless of whether you choose classroom or video conferencing, each course also has a work based assessment component.

The Modular Training shotfirer short course includes a course manual along with a theory workbook with a series of questions in multi-choice and short answer format.  You will also complete a 90 minute closed book exam.

The closed book exam is part of the nationally recognised training but is also a mandatory requirement for DMIRS.  While DMIRS has an 80% pass rate for the exam for the purposes of licencing, Modular Training must ensure that you achieve 100% on your online exam in order to achieve competency overall in the course.  This course has been approved by DMIRS and can be found on the Approved Training Provider List on the DMIRS website.  In its most recent audit as an approved provider, DMIRS found no non-compliance and praised Modular Training for its thorough and engaging course that adopted, and promoted a safety culture.

 
Upon satisfactory completion of all assessment requirements in the course, including 100% on the closed book exam, you will be eligible to receive your Statement of Attainment
  
  1. RIIBLA205D Store, handle and transport explosives
  2. RIIBLA301D Conduct surface shotfiring operations
  3. RIIBLA305D Conduct secondary blasting
These competencies form part of the RII30115 Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations.
 
Please ensure your DGSC is brought to the course as you will need to provide this to the facilitator on the first day.

The theory course is held at our Perth location OR online via video conferencing:
  • Level 3, 190 St Georges Terrace, Perth WA

When choosing to complete the course via video conference, please note there needs to be an allowance of 1 week between course booking and course commencement to allow for the shotfiring manual to be posted and to confirm that suitable technology requirements can be confirmed and installed where necessary. Video conferencing is usually conducted via Zoom.
