Shotfirer Training – Surface & Underground skill sets

Course aim

Modular Training offers Department of Mines and Petroleum approved surface and underground shotfiring courses aligned with nationally recognised units of competency which are required for participants to apply for their surface or underground shotfiring licence. The shotfiring course involves both theory and practical applications.

Prerequisites for shotfiring course

Dangerous Goods Security Card – All participants must bring their Dangerous Goods Security Card to the course. DGSC application forms can be found at any major Australian post office.

Participants must have a minimum 6months experience using, storing and transporting explosives in their current work environment.

RIIBLA301D – Conduct surface shotfiring operations

RIIBLA303D – Conduct underground development shotfiring

RIIBLA304D – Conduct underground production shotfiring

RIIBLA305D – Conduct secondary blasting

Duration: 3 days theory (incl. assessment workbook and exam)
Days: Tuesday to Thursday
Times: 8:00am to 4:00pm

Tea and coffee is supplied on all courses, however morning tea and lunch is not supplied, so please make own arrangements.


Practical assessments are to be discussed when booking in for the theory or documented evidence with prior arrangement (conditions apply).

Refresher Shotfirer courses

Shotfirer refresher courses –  held in Kalgoorlie and Malaga at an arranged time and date.

Courses take approximately half day and each participant must supply current evidence.  


Courses currently being held in W.A. Kalgoorlie, Perth and onsite as required.

Participants who successfully complete both theory and practical examinations and meet the requirements of the Department of Mines And Petroleum will be issued with a statement of attainment and the application form to apply for a West Australian Shotfirers Licence.

General Notes

As places on all Shotfirers courses are restricted to a maximum of 8 participants, prompt registration is encouraged. In the event that you register and then, for any reason, are unable to attend, we require a minimum of seven (7) working days’ notice for a refund to be given less an administration fee of $50.00.

No refund can be given once course commences!

Company bookings must be accompanied by a purchase order number before training commences.

Modular Training reserves the right to cancel this course should insufficient numbers register. Should this occur, those who have registered would be notified and registration fees will be refunded or, if requested, transferred to a future course.

ALL CARE WILL BE GIVEN, BUT NO RESPONSIBILITY TAKEN. Participants and/or their employers are responsible for their own property / personal insurance.

Please note: Course availability is subject to a minimum number of 3 participants to a maximum number of 8 participants. Please contact us to arrange a booking or for further information. We can also deliver training for your staff at your premises or site, subject to suitable facilities being available.
